Nature and Conservation

With sandy beaches backed by dunes, no natural predators and very little disturbance, Blakeney Point in Norfolk is the perfect place for grey seals to live and give birth to around 4,000 pups each year.
They can be seen here all year round, but between late October and mid January, large numbers congregate to give birth and breed.
The National Trust and its team of volunteers undertake a survey and count the seal population in a specific area, with that information fed into the Sea Mammal Research Unit (SMRU).
The unit is based at St Andrew's Universicy in Scotland, which estimates grey seal productivicy for the whole of the UK. The National Trust also help to maintain the beaches at Blakeney Point, which the grey seals and other species rely on to survive.
